Story #1: Vivian’s Pound Cake (And the Recipe for a Life Well-Lived)


When I was growing up, we had a woman named Vivian who worked in our home. 


And let me tell you—Vivian did not play around. 


She was the kind of woman who would heat up a spatula on the stove and threaten to use it if we didn’t get our baths done. (I guess the Jones boys needed some extra motivation?).


But here’s what I remember most about Vivian: She baked the most incredible pound cakes.


When someone in our community was going through a hard time—a death, an illness, a struggle—Vivian would show up at their door with one of her famous pound cakes. And those cakes?


They were legendary


A pound of butter. 


A pound of sugar. 


A pound of flour. 


A tablespoon of vanilla. A teaspoon of salt.


Simple. Classic. Unforgettable.


A few years ago, I went to Vivian’s funeral. And her pastor, Reverend Emory Virgil, gave a eulogy that I will always remember.


He used her pound cake recipe as a metaphor for her life.


He said Vivian’s life had:

  • A pound of love—the way she showed up for everyone around her

  • A pound of faith—her deep, unshakable trust in God

  • A pound of grit—because let’s be real, she was tough

  • A tablespoon of vanilla—the sweetness that made everything better

  • A teaspoon of salt—just enough edge to keep it real


And as I sat there listening, I thought: That’s it. That’s what a life well-lived looks like.


It’s not about having all the ingredients. It’s about combining them in the right way, in the right order, with intention.


And that’s exactly what your succession plan needs to be.

Story #2: What Holly Learned During COVID (And Why You Need a Plan B)


My wife Holly is a serious baker. 


She measures everything by weight and follows recipes to the letter. She’s the kind of person who makes me look like a total amateur in the kitchen (because, let’s be honest, I am).


But during COVID, something happened that threw her off her game.


Certain ingredients just… disappeared. You couldn’t find them anywhere. Specialty flours. Spices. Things she needed for her favorite recipes.
